Beijing, China: The capital of China has many attractions drawing tourists to it throughout the year. Today, I would say the top three attractions would include the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City and the 2008 Olympic venues.
The Great Wall of China remains one of the Seven Wonders of the World, stretching more than 4,000 miles. The wall was first constructed in the fifth century to protect China's northern borders, and at one time, it was guarded by more than one million soldiers. Now, it is still a breathtaking display, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in China.
The Forbidden City, from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, was the imperial palace and home of China's emperor. It was the heart of the Chinese government. Today, it covers 720,000 square meters with 980 buildings that include 8,707 rooms. And it is a true display of traditional Chinese architecture.
And, although the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games have concluded, many Chinese still travel to the city to take in the incredible Bird's Nest Stadium, Watercube National Aquatic Center and Olympic village. Their unique design and infrastructure guarantee that they remain hot attractions in Beijing even now.
Macau: As the only legalized gambling city in the Chinese-speaking world, Macau has benefited greatly from China's economic growth and the Chinese propensity for gambling. It is indeed Asia's sin city. Only 45 minutes from Hong Kong, most visitors take daytrips to Macau, gambling at the city's casinos, shopping at the variety of high-end stores and taking in the Vegas-style hotels.
