Last week, China spent eight days celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. This celebration, though, represented much more than the ending of a civil war in 1949 and new government rule. In fact, over the past 60 years, China has experienced an incredible path to economic prosperity.
Chinese throughout the country have participated in this success. And I think one of the biggest telltale signs of progress that China has made over the past 60 years can easily be seen in the great strides China's education industry has made.
After the founding for the People's Republic of China, Chinese policy makers understood the necessity of a well-educated population in order for the country to truly play a bigger role on the global scene. So the Chinese government placed a much greater emphasis on basic education, providing financial aid and other resources (materials and teachers) to help improve the education industry.
As a result, the education sector in China drastically improved. All you need to do is look at the facts…
| 1949 | Today | |
|---|---|---|
| Illiteracy (Ages 15 to 45) | 80% |
3.58% |
| Access to Primary Schools for School-Aged Children |
Less than 20% |
99.5% |
| Primary School Graduates Able to Study in Middle School |
6% |
98.5% |
| Number of Students Studying at Higher Education Institutions |
120,000 |
20 million |
| Number of Teachers in Educational Institutions |
930,000 |
14.63 million |
In addition, over the past 10 years, the number of doctoral degrees earned in China has expanded fivefold! So as you can see, there have been incredible changes in China's education system over the past 60 years. In fact, China's education sector has been growing at a faster pace than its economy as a whole -- and we all know how red-hot China's economic growth has been in recent years!
